3 tips for driving safely in Wisconsin winters

Winter in Wisconsin is often unpredictable. The Great Lakes region is prone to sudden snow and ice, which makes the simple task of driving more difficult and dangerous. Whether you are going on a long distance trip or you are simply going down the block to the store, you may easily become a victim in a winter car accident.

While other motorists may be negligent or not have enough winter driving experience, you can improve your safety by adhering to some simple guidelines. Here is how you can stay safe on the icy Wisconsin roads.

1. Slow it down

All of your driving tasks should be done slower than usual during the winter, especially when it is snowing. To be as safe as possible, you should accelerate, decelerate, turn and drive slower than you normally do. This helps your tires maintain traction and give you more time to maneuver.

2. Keep up on maintenance

It may be time for a mechanic to check up on your car. Certain components of your vehicle are especially important to check during the winter, including:

  • Battery
  • Tires
  • Lights
  • Cooling system
  • Antifreeze levels
  • Windshield wipers

Make sure you complete any necessary replacements or repairs to ensure your car is operating in optimal condition.

3. Know when you should stay home

Before you head out, check the weather on your smartphone or Google. If there is a blizzard and cars are piling up on the highway, maybe you should delay your trek until the storm is over. Even if you are a skillful driver in the snow, not everyone else is. Do not tempt fate. Unless you absolutely have to be somewhere, refrain from driving when it is particularly hazardous outside.

Driving in the snow takes skill and determination, even if you have been doing it for years. But what happens if another driver causes a car accident while you are being a safe and mindful driver? If this happens to you, consult an attorney.
